Gunsmithing by Garret Preece

Garret Preece is a machinist-turned master gunsmith and active PRS competitor based in Ogden, Utah. He learned precision rifle work hands-on—starting evenings at ES-Tactical, then building a repeatable process that produces rifles known for “stacking bullets.” In 2019 he moved Preece Precision from a garage into a full brick-and-mortar shop and has been building purpose-built hunting and match rifles ever since.

Why shooters hire Garret:

  • Proven in competition. Garret has 140+ PRS matches under his belt (45 Pro Series), including a Regional Series win in 2022 and 4th of 60 at a Pro Series match in 2021.
  • Trusted by top PRS shooters. In Precision Rifle Blog’s 2024 analysis of what the pros use, Preece Precision was represented by nine of the top-200 shooters (with one in the top 10). Garret also placed 141st in the 2023 PRS Open Division.
  • Full-service, precision-first work. From chamber jobs and muzzle threads to bedding, truing, and prefit programs for actions like Impact, Lone Peak, and Zermatt, the shop is set up to take a project from parts to a rifle that performs.
  • Purpose-built results. Garret’s philosophy is straightforward: tailor the rifle to the job, machine with discipline, and deliver accuracy you can measure on steel or in the field.

    2. Select components. We’ll recommend an action/barrel/trigger/chassis that fits the job and timeline.
    3. Machine work & QC. Precision chambering, torque specs, headspace checks; optional prefit pairing.
    4. Zero & setup support. Guidance on break-in, torque, and data collection so your first range trip is productive.
    5. Fast, compliant shipping or pickup from our Ogden shop.

Who we build for:

  • PRS/NRL competitors who value reliable cycling, long barrel life, and match-grade consistency.
  • Backcountry hunters chasing ounces without giving up repeatability.
